How to Create a Classroom Calming Corner

By Sean Farrell

A classroom calming corner isn’t just beneficial for students who need a bit of a break, but can be useful for teachers and other students, too. The key is to set it up properly — and ensure your students understand how to use it to its full potential.

Your calming corner should cue students to begin with a feelings check to help them identify how they feel before moving on to a calming strategy, which could be anything from journaling or listening to music to practicing breathing exercises or squeezing a stress ball. Then, it’s time for another feelings check to see if they’re feeling calmer. If so, it’s time for them to check in with their teacher or rejoin the class; if not, they may want to try a different calming strategy to see if that’s more helpful. By stocking your calming corner with a variety of tools and providing clear instructions for use, you can make it easier for overwhelmed students to remove themselves before they disrupt the class, which makes learning easier for everyone.
